South Africa has winch spots.
Driving along an inconspicuous river through the capital city of Pretoria, on the day after the event, we found 5 hittable spots within a 1km section of the river, (that’s just a little more than half a mile for the Americans), but with only a few hours to shred before the 18 hour flight home, we only got to session 2 of them…
-Predatoria-
Pretty straightforward African drop… 9 ft. (2.75 meters) tall, with plenty of run-up. At this height, you’ve got ample time to float in the air and really think about the way things are going. Don’t be distracted by splashes you hear while walking the rope out to the start, it’s probably nothing. The most notable impediment to this spot is a brutally short landing zone, brought to a swift end with an intimidating arrangement of boulders and earth emerging from the water. While experimenting with Predatoria, we discovered that it’s best to ollie 5 or 6 feet before the end of the run-up to avoid the rock piles down below… Still no sure bets though.

-Interpretoria-
An unconventional winch spot, but super sick nonetheless. This spot could be hit going up or down, both of which involve crouching through a low underpass at some point, but I think the short end of this spot is better to have at the landing than the run-up here. Going up it means starting downstream, tricking up onto the bank and then making sure you don’t hit the walls or the ceiling of the underpass when the end of the bank tries to pop you onto the flat slab inside. It’s still only 3 inches of water running over concrete on the inside, so you can’t really put it on edge too hard. Once you come out from under the bridge, get ready for the water to turn into solid rocky ground pretty quickly… It’s tricky, but a really cool spot.

As it turns out, 2 hours is definitely not enough time to properly session an entire country’s winching possibilities… I’ll be going back soon. Who’s coming with me?
